The short answer
Around 40 words per minute is the figure usually quoted as the average adult typing speed on a full-size keyboard. Anything from 50 to 60 wpm is comfortably above that, 70 to 80 wpm is genuinely fast, and sustained 100 wpm or more is rare outside people who type for a living. Accuracy counts as much as speed: 90 wpm riddled with corrections does less work than a clean 60.

These are bands, not a measured statistic. The 40 wpm average is the figure cited almost everywhere for adults; the positions above it come from the score distributions large online typing tests publish. People who choose to take a typing test skew faster than the general population, so read every position here as “roughly”.

What is the average typing speed?
The figure quoted almost everywhere is about 40 words per minute for an adult on a full-size keyboard. It is a useful anchor rather than a precise measurement, and it hides an enormous spread. Somebody who has never learned touch typing and hunts for keys with two fingers usually lands somewhere in the twenties or low thirties. A trained touch typist doing ordinary office work sits nearer 50 to 70. People who type for a living — transcriptionists, court reporters using a normal keyboard, career data entry clerks — commonly test in the 80s and 90s, and the fastest speeds ever recorded are reported to be in the region of 200 wpm, which is a different sport entirely.
The average is also drifting in two directions at once. More people type all day than at any point in history, which pushes it up; more of that typing happens with thumbs on a phone, where nobody approaches their desktop speed, which pulls it down. So when you ask whether your WPM is good, the honest answer starts with a question back: good compared to whom, on what keyboard, typing what?
So is my WPM good?
Take the bands at the top of this page as the short version. Under 25 wpm, typing is probably the slow part of your day and worth practising. Between 25 and 39 you are slightly under the usual average. At 40 to 49 you are average, which is a perfectly functional place to be. From 50 to 59 you are past the midpoint of most typing-test populations, 60 to 74 is above average, 75 to 94 is fast, and anything sustained above 95 wpm puts you in a small minority.
The number that matters more than the band, though, is the second one on your result: accuracy. A 90 wpm run at 85% accuracy produces text you then have to go back and fix, and the repair time never appears in the score. A steady 60 wpm at 99% usually finishes the actual job first. That is why this test reports an adjusted speed rather than a raw one — your raw keystroke rate discounted by the share of words that came back correctly.
How long a document takes at each speed
Percentiles are abstract. Minutes are not. This is the same arithmetic the tool runs, at a few common speeds, with conversational speech included in the last column for scale.

Typing speed percentiles, and why to hold them loosely
Every percentile you will read online — including the bands here — comes from people who chose to take a typing test. That population skews faster than the general public, because slow typists rarely go looking for a stopwatch. Treat a percentile as a rough position, not a measured statistic about humanity.
Four other things move a score more than most people expect:
- The passage. Common words with plain punctuation score far higher than text full of proper nouns, numbers, semicolons and quotation marks. Some tests use random common words, which flatters everybody.
- Whether corrections count. Tests that let you backspace freely and only score the final text produce a different number from tests that lock each character as you commit it.
- The keyboard. Your own keyboard, at your own desk, in your usual posture, is worth several words a minute over a strange laptop.
- Language and layout. WPM is defined in five-character words, so a language with longer average words scores lower for identical effort, and an unfamiliar layout costs more than any amount of practice can hide.
The practical upshot: compare your score to yourself over time, on the same test, rather than to a number you read somewhere.
What is a good typing speed for a job?
General office and administrative adverts usually name 40 to 50 wpm, which is another way of saying they want somebody who does not hunt for keys. Two caveats worth knowing before an interview. First, employers almost always test you on their own tool, and their passage will not be this one — practise on a few different tests so no single text flatters you. Second, for most knowledge work the honest answer is that typing speed stopped being the bottleneck somewhere around 60 wpm; deciding what to write is the slow part. If a role tests data entry specifically, the keystrokes per hour test measures the unit those postings actually use.
How WPM is calculated here
A “word” in typing measurement is five characters, spaces included. That convention exists so a long word costs proportionally more than a short one, and it is why WPM figures are comparable across tests at all. This test divides the characters you typed by five, divides that by the minutes you took, and calls the result your raw speed.
Accuracy is the share of the words you typed that also appear, in order, in the passage. It is computed as a longest common subsequence over the words, so dropping or repeating one word costs one point instead of throwing every word after it out of alignment. Adjusted WPM is the raw rate multiplied by that accuracy, and it is the number placed on the band table. The clock starts on your first keystroke and stops when you say you are done, so reading the passage first costs you nothing. Rounds shorter than a second, or with less than a sentence typed, are refused rather than reported: a rate derived from a fraction of a second is arithmetic, not a measurement. Pasting is disabled for the same reason.
How to type faster, in the order that actually works
- Accuracy before speed. Deliberately slow down until you are barely making errors, then let the speed come back. Practising at a pace where you make mistakes trains the mistakes.
- Stop looking down. The single largest gain available to most adults, and the most uncomfortable fortnight.
- Use all ten fingers, including the weak ones. Four-finger typists hit a ceiling in the fifties that no amount of extra practice moves.
- Short, frequent practice. Ten focused minutes a day beats an hour on Sunday, because this is motor learning.
- Fix the ergonomics. Wrists level, screen at eye height, a keyboard you can reach without hunching. Comfort is speed over an afternoon.
Realistically, a motivated adult can move from 35 to 60 wpm in a few months of regular practice. Getting from 60 to 90 takes considerably longer, and past that most people find the effort no longer pays for itself.
The ceiling: you already produce words at 150 wpm
Ordinary conversational speech runs at roughly 150 words per minute, and people manage that without practice, without a keyboard, and without ever having taken a course. Even a fast typist at 80 wpm is producing words at about half the rate they talk. That gap is the reason dictation exists, and it does not close no matter how much you practise your typing.
The honest version of the comparison is not “speak and get double the words” — a spoken draft still needs thinking time and a proofread, and dictation is poor at code, spreadsheets and anything requiring precise formatting. Questions people ask
Is 40 wpm a good typing speed?
It is average, which means it is fine for most jobs and most life. It clears the 40 to 50 wpm line that general office adverts tend to name, and it is below what data-entry and transcription roles ask for.
Is 60 wpm good?
Yes. Sixty is comfortably above the usual average and past the point where typing is the bottleneck in ordinary knowledge work. With accuracy above 95% it meets the requirement in most postings that name a number at all.
Is 100 wpm realistic?
Realistic, but uncommon. Sustained 100 wpm on real text — not a familiar practice passage — is professional-typist territory and usually the product of years of daily typing rather than deliberate training.
Does accuracy matter more than speed?
For finished work, yes. Errors cost more time to find and fix than they saved by being typed quickly, and unlike speed they also cost credibility. This is why the headline number here is speed adjusted by accuracy rather than raw keystrokes.
Why is my score different on other typing tests?
Different passages, different rules about corrections, different treatment of punctuation and capitals, and different handling of the words you did not finish. A spread of ten wpm between two tests is entirely normal. Compare like with like.
What is a good typing speed for a student?
Schools commonly aim for something in the region of 25 to 35 wpm by the end of primary school and 40 wpm or so by the mid-teens, but targets vary by country and curriculum. For coursework, accuracy and touch typing without looking matter more than any particular number.
